Alkaliphiles as useful resources in biotechnology.
Indienz AB has since many years focused work on alkaliphiles, both screening for new organisms, evaluation of their enzymes for future industrial applications, identification of unique biomolecules and also use of viable cells for tailor-made applications. Screening: isolates from many alkaline environments has led to isolation of a range of promising organisms. Unique biomolecules: new antibiotics, osmolytes are two examples of interesting areas studied. Enzymes: a range of hydrolytic enzymes are excreted to the alkaline environment where they still are active. Applications in several industrial branches are possible (food, pulp and paper, textile, leather, upgrading of biogas etc.) Intact organisms can be used in challenging projects, such as production of self-healing concrete; or treatment of alkaline industrial waste water.
